2007 Silicon Valley Boomer Business Plan Competition
Are you developing innovative products and services for the
45+ market?
Consider this – as of 2006, in the United States alone, there are more than 108 million people over the age of 45. The 78 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964 make up 28% of the U.S. market and own more than 77% of all financial assets. This baby boomer market represents over $2 trillion in annual spending power! By the year 2030 there will be 71.5 million Americans age 65 and older, more than double the number of Americans currently within that demographic. This massive demographic shift means new opportunities for growth, service and profit. This is a business opportunity you can’t ignore.
Do you have a business plan or startup venture that shows significant business potential for this burgeoning market? If so, we invite you to enter the 2007 Silicon Valley Boomer Business Plan Competition co-sponsored by the Executive Development Center at Santa Clara University‚s Leavey School of Business and Mary Furlong and Associates.
From early-stage ventures in medicine to media, fashion to financial services and beyond, the 2007 Boomer Business Plan Competition aims to generate the best ideas from the best universities as well as tap into the business expertise and creativity of any entrepreneurs globally who are addressing the 45+ market.
TWO (2) $10,000 prizes will be given in two separate categories:
Health Category is for business ideas – with an emphasis on the boomer and/or aging market - that relate to opportunities focused on health, wellness, fitness, eldercare, or medical devices. Screening judges with expertise in different segments within the various health fields will evaluate the business plans. Technology innovations can be integrated into these business ideas.
General Category is for business ideas - with an emphasis on the boomer and/or aging market - that relate to the areas of: travel, financial services, media, transportation, grand-parenting, relationships, social networks, real estate, fashion and beauty, recreation and play, spirituality. Screening judges with expertise in these different segments will evaluate the business plans. Technology innovations can be integrated into these business ideas.
The 2007 $10,000 Boomer Business Plan Competition will provide contestants with the opportunity to meet investors and partners, secure resources, and get media exposure to help turn dreams into realities.
Take advantage of this opportunity!
This is an opportunity you can’t pass up if you are at an early stage in the development of your business. In Phase 1 of the competition, all entrants will receive feedback on their executive summary submissions following the first round of the judging process.
In Phase 2, entrepreneurs selected as semifinalists in the competition will have their full business plans reviewed by venture capitalists and industry experts and receive additional feedback on their submissions.
In Phase 3, the final phase of the competition, the top 5 finalists in each category will present to an esteemed panel of judges at the 2007 Silicon Valley Boomer Venture Summit at Santa Clara University on June 19, 2007. Testimonials
"Winning the Boomer Competition provided us with unique exposure to investors, pharma partners and perhaps most important of all, potential customers. After the publication at the AARP newsletter, we received numerous inquiries from ordinary people, anxious to know when our device will be on the market. This gave us more credibility with our investors than any expert opinion we could have gathered!
Now, more than ever, our company operates with a true sense of the urgency, and this motivates us to persevere and succeed. Without the competition, neither we nor our investors would have never known the potential impact our device has on the boomer population."

“I cannot tell you enough how beneficial entering the Business Plan Competition was. The PR, both at the time and what has evolved since then, are wonderful. I have spent much of the past year continuing to learn about boomer marketing and this has influenced considerably the marketing material and strategic approach developed for the franchise. I am thrilled to report that we have just sold our first franchise. It has been a long, hard road, but one worth taking.”

"I just want to thank you for all the time you invested in making the Baby Boomer Business Plan challenge and the "What's Next Conference" such wonderful events. ...I have gained some great ideas from the group's feedback about our company's business plan. It was one of the most valuable experiences I have had since starting my company four years ago.
One of the key things I was able to witness, as one of the entrepreneurs in the Top 20, was your strength in networking and building "buzz." ... I still can't believe all the experts that we met in just a few short days! Also, your advice, kind words, and introductions were invaluable to me"
